May Crowning of Blessed Virgin Mary

On Sunday May 7th, Mother’s Day, the day we all honor our mothers, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church honored and crowned the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  This is a time honored traditional devotion in which the Blessed Virgin Mary is crowned with a wreath of flowers.  It is usually done in May and on Mother’s Day to recognize “Mary as Queen of Heaven, Queen of Earth and Queen of Peace”.1   “The crown calls to mind the victory wreaths that await the baptized in the fullness of time.”2  This is a form of reverence that in the West from the 16th century became widespread for all the faithful.  A Marian Hymn such as Ave Maria, O Queen of Heaven or another is sung as a closing to the ceremony.
